
It was originally believed that the third finger of the left hand was directly connected to the heart by veins. This is why engagement and wedding bands are traditionally worn on this finger. This started as far back as the Ancient Egyptians. The Romans wore rings around their necks attached to small keys, representing the marriage bond between the two individuals. Diamonds being included in the first engagement rings started among nobility, royalty in particular.
The Victorian era is considered to be one of the most romantic time periods due to the loving relationship between Queen Victoria and her husband Albert. At the end of this era the Tiffany setting was introduced. This setting was able to boost the diamonds brilliance, which in turn, made a diamond engagement ring more popular to wear and readily available to most.

During the World War II era, big, bold feminine styles with ribbons, flowers, and bows were extremely popular. Platinum was used to help with the war efforts, so gold was used more frequently.
